Ince Marshes and the adjacent Mersey Estuary are recognised as important areas for wildlife. The Mersey Estuary has been designated as a Site of Special Scientific Importance (SSSI), Special Protection Area (SPA) and Ramsar site. The Ince Resource Recovery Park (RRP) is situated within the Frodsham, Helsby and Ince Marshes Site of Biological Importance (SBI).
A full ecological assessment of the site for the purposes of the proposed development has therefore been carried out. This assessment included a range of habitat surveys and studies, in particular for bird species and water voles. The work also included an assessment of the woodland and hedgerows.
As a result of this work the design of the Resource Recovery Park incorporates a comprehensive scheme for ecological mitigation. The scheme we are proposing in total covers around 42 hectare (104 acre) of land set aside for environmental mitigation for a 58 hectare (143 acre) development. The scheme comprises the following:
- 18 hectares (45 acres) of land either side of the berth set aside purely for habitat mitigation for bird species. These birds include raptors and waders which are found using the estuary, and the scheme will enhance the nesting and feeding habitats for these species.
- A comprehensive Sustainable Drainage Scheme (SUDS) including a network of drains and ditches which will enhance the habitat available for water voles in the area.
- A Community Park of approximately 8-9 hectares (20-22 acres) which will be available for public use.
- Retention of larger areas of trees with extensive tree planting to provide landscaping and screening of the development.
The scheme is therefore designed not only to limit the impact of the development on the ecology of the area, but to actually provide and enhance a range of habitats for species which are found in the area.
