The Development Concept

It is proposed that 600,000 tonnes per year of Refuse Derived Fuel (RDF) will be utilised at the Ince RRP power plant. The facility is designed to be a dedicated facility to serve the waste needs of the region, including Cheshire, Greater Manchester and Merseyside. We believe that to maximise the efficiency of the plant the RDF power station should serve the wider region.

A centralized large plant will allow RDF from several local Mechanical Biological Treatment facilities to be sent to a larger RDF fired power plant. This centralized large plant is more efficient than several RDF plants and will be cheaper to build and operate. By utilising the multi-modal potential of Ince RRP the environmental impact of the transport of the fuel from these local facilities to the centralized power facility can be minimised.

For this development we want to maximise the use of rail to transport the bulk of the RDF fuel from the region. RDF from Cheshire will arrive on the road. From Greater Manchester RDF will be transported on rail and from Merseyside, a combination of rail and water transportation will be utilised.

Around 600,000 tonnes per year of RDF fuel will therefore come from the following sources:

  • The majority will be sourced from MBT facilities in Cheshire, Greater Manchester, Merseyside and elsewhere.
  • The remainder of the RDF will be supplied by the MBT facility which forms part of the Integrated Waste Management Facility located within the Ince RRP.
