According to the Building Research Establishment (BRE) the UK consumes approximately 47 million tonnes of wood every year, and of this 5 – 7.5 million tonnes becomes wood waste . Only 0.8 million tonnes of wood waste is recycled.
It is proposed that 150,000 tpa of post industrial and post consumer timber product would be imported by water and road in containers and bulk tippers. Recycled wood could be used for products in a range of markets that are developing and emerging such as mulches and soil conditioners, wood chip products, horse and cattle bedding, equine surfaces. Some of the non-recyclable wood could also be used to produce a refuse-derived fuel or utilised in the manufacture of ethanol.
